Information about Measure RU and ST
The Los Nietos School District, one of California's oldest, has proudly served the Whittier/Santa Fe Springs-Los Nietos community since 1861. Our commitment to education builds a strong community, ensuring our students are prepared academically and socially for future success.
All of our schools and the Education Center are over 50 years old and require upgrades in classrooms, security and technology. Ensuring student safety is always a top priority. We need reinforced entry points and fencing, as well as updated security cameras and communication systems to deter gang activity and to keep our students safe during emergencies.
Every student in our district deserves access to modern classrooms, new computers, and state-of-the-art labs. To provide our students with the best opportunities for success, we need funding for STEAM education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
Because the State does not provide funding for school facilities, local schools must rely on local funding to maintain quality educational programs and facilities. The Los Nietos Board of Trustees has placed two bond measures, Measure RU and Measure ST on the November 2024 ballot to address these needs. If approved by voters, funding from these measures could be used to:
Measure RU: LOS NIETOS SCHOOL DISTRICT REPAIR AND UPDATE MEASURE
- Repair Aging School Facilities: repairs for leaky roofs and windows, removal of asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials, and upgraded heating and cooling systems.
Measure RU would cost property owners $30 per $100,000 of a property’s assessed (not market) value per year and is projected to generate $28.5 million dollars focused on school repairs and updates.
Measure ST: LOS NIETOS SCHOOL DISTRICT SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY MEASURE
- Improve Student Safety and Security: Preventing injuries by repairing broken concrete and uneven play surfaces. Upgrading security systems, including fencing, cameras, and emergency communication systems.
- Update Classroom Technology: Moving the Education Center to Los Nietos Middle School, expanding technology for STEAM Education, developing science labs, and creating spaces for Music and Art to prepare students for success in high school, college, and diverse careers.
Measure ST would cost property owners $28 per $100,000 of a property’s assessed (not market) value per year and is projected to generate $26.5 million dollars focused on school safety, security and Technology updates.
Financial Responsibility and Oversight
Both Measures RU and ST would include stringent financial oversight to guarantee responsible fund usage, including:
- All bond funds would remain under local control, protected from State appropriation.
- A mandatory citizens’ oversight committee, independent annual audits, and annual public spending reports to ensure funds are used as intended.
- No funds would be allocated for administrators’ salaries or pensions
Furthermore, Measures RU and ST will also help our local schools qualify for state matching funds that will otherwise go to schools in other communities.
