Congratulations to Mrs. Edith Marcel, Parent Volunteer of the Year!

On behalf of the Los Nietos School District's Superintendent, Jonathan Vasquez, the Board of Trustees, and Principal Marla Duncan, we are proud to announce and present to the community the 2016 Volunteer of the Year.  Congratulations to Nelson Elementary School's very own, Mrs. Edith Marcel!  Mrs. Marcel was honored at the Whittier Area School Administrator's Community Service Breakfast on February 5, 2016 held at the Pico Park Community Center. She attended the event with her husband and two children who call Nelson home, and other Los Nietos administrators.

Although Edith Marcel has been selected to be honored for her volunteerism at Nelson School, she could easily be honored as the “district” volunteer of the year. Mrs. Marcel has organized events at Nelson Elementary School that are well coordinated with maximum participation. The school’s mud run was one of the most exciting events held in the past few years and profited more than $5,000. Her coordinated effort to get Nelson students to walk to school was extremely successful because of her constant communication with staff and community members. Additionally, she works with the school’s PTO, holding the position of co-president. She attends all school activities, to insure all school events are well attended and organized.

But her commitment extends beyond the Nelson Elementary School campus. She has served as the President of the Promotoras de Salud in Action for the past two years to help support the incorporation of healthy student activities at all sites in the Los Nietos School District. Her role is also one that provides support for parents, i.e. promoting parent education and speaking as an advocate for parents. Furthermore, she serves on the Board of Healthy Los Nietos, a collaborative that strives to provide healthy activities and lifestyle choices for the families of Los Nietos School District. Moreover, Mrs. Marcel serves on the district’s Bond Oversight Committee, and is the Chairperson for the Board of Directors for Plaza de la Raza Child Development Inc., which services many of the pre-school children in our district. Mrs. Marcel is well known for her welcoming personality and for greeting parents, and school and district employees with a smile always.

If you have yet to consider serving as a volunteer in one of our four schools in the district, please see our site Principals. There is much work to be done as Los Nietos continues "Building Our Community Through Education.
