As part of the partnership between the Los Nietos School District and PIH Health known as “Healthy Los Nietos” Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings were conducted with all first, second, third, and fifth grade students at Aeolian School. This was the second school that completed health screenings this year with the Los Nietos Middle School 7th grade students being screened on August 28th. Assisting in the screenings were health clerks from all four Los Nietos Schools and the Los Nietos School District nurse, medical residents, doctors, and health care professionals from PIH Health, health professionals from AltaMed (Healthy Los Nietos Partner), and Los Nietos parent health advocates “Promotoras de Salud in Action”.
Superintendent Vasquez became very involved in bringing health education and awareness to parents in 2012 when he was made aware of some very significant health statistics that affect students in the Los Nietos/West Whittier area. A health study completed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ranked all 128 cities and communities (1 being the lowest and 128 being the highest) in Los Angles County in the areas of childhood obesity and mortality caused by diabetes. Children in the Los Nietos/West Whittier area ranked 111/128 in childhood obesity and 89/128 in instances of death caused by childhood diabetes. Although the Los Nietos School District prepares students academically to be successful in high school and college, students may not have the opportunity to fully access their educational opportunities if they are not in good health.
The health screenings have been very helpful in helping the District and PIH Health through the “Healthy Los Nietos” program determine how we can better provide health information to our students and their parents. One of the our health goals this year is to get student Body Mass Index (BMI) results to parents as quickly as possible after we do the initial student screenings.
Superintendent Vasquez and the Los Nietos Board of Trustees would like to thank the team from PIH Health, AltaMed, Promotoras de Sauld in Action, and the district health care professionals for their help in providing health information to the students of the Los Nietos School District. Health screenings will take place at Rancho Santa Gertrudes School on September 11th, and at Ada S. Nelson School on September 18th for all first, third, and fifth grade students.
