On February 4, 2015, Superintendent Vasquez welcomed community health partners to his second Community Advisory Board (CAB) meeting of the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose for the event was to share upcoming health events that would benefit students and adults within the Los Nietos Community. Members of ten different agencies shared upcoming events in the Los Nietos/Whittier/Santa Fe Springs areas. Listed below are some of the highlights from the CAB meeting.
Representatives of PIH Health shared some health data showing that the health education and health screenings that they have been doing the past several years at all four schools in the Los Nietos School District have begun showing a positive impact in the way both students and adults are viewing health (exercise, eating more balanced meals, and drinking water instead of soda) concerns in the Los Nietos Community.
Santa Fe Springs representative, Maritza Sosa-Nieves, shared several health initiatives that Santa Fe Springs is currently focusing on this year. On Thursday nights, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the city will be hosting a farmers' market at the Town Center Plaza that is open free to the public. Santa Fe Springs will also be offering free adult education classes at the Gus Velasco Center beginning March 9th-April 13th from 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Additionally, on June 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. the City of Santa Fe Springs will be sponsoring a “Family Fun Run” held at Lake Center Athletic Park that is open free to the public.
Mrs. Sosa-Nieves also thanked the Los Nietos parents of “Promotoras de Salud in Action” for helping make the second annual “Family Night Out” on November 4th a huge success by participating and providing health education lessons to the participants at the event.
Representatives from AltaMed Health Care Service shared the success of the Aeolian School after school health education lessons that were offered to both parents and students last year. Both students and parent participants showed decreased Body Mass Index (BMI) scores after participating in the program. The program entitled, “ On the Move Healthy Kids Program” was made possible through a grant and will begin at Rancho Santa Gertrudes School later this month. The program is being offered free to parents and students this year.
Additional CAB reports were provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the parents of “Promotoras de Salud in Action”, Think Together, and two new CAB members, Choose Health LA Kids and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)”. The EFNEP program offers free health education to parents and adults made possible through a federally funded grant. Los Nietos is looking to offer the free ENFEP services to the Los Nietos community later this year.
Superintendent Vasquez thanked all in attendance for working collaboratively with the Los Nietos School District to meet the health needs of families in the Los Nietos School District, and said he looked forward to seeing them at his third CAB Meeting of the year on April 1, 2015.
