All four schools in the Los Nietos School District opened their doors and welcomed students to the 2014-2015 school year. Elementary principals Becky Speh, Octavio Perez, and Marla Duncan were pleased to meet the new kindergarten students and parents, as well as welcome back their returning students. Principal Brann Zelaya at the Los Nietos Middle School was pleased to see the 7th graders she had met earlier in the week at orientation and greet her returning 8th graders.
All classrooms were warm, inviting, and ready to support the eager learners from across the district. Teachers were well-prepared, organized, and shared opening procedures, school rules, and began learning activities to get to know students' interests, abilities, and personal goals for the year. Their structure and high expectations served to set the stage for high academic achievement throughout the year.
From across the campuses, the smell of home cooked food wafted in the air as Nutrition Teams prepared for the healthy and delicious lunchtime meals. All of the school cafes boast self-contained facilities wherein foods are prepared at the individual school sites, with the option of salad bars and fresh fruits that support the Healthy Los Nietos vision. This year, many more classes will participate in the "Breakfast in the Classroom" program and the Nutrition Services division is happy to host a "Second Chance Breakfast" opportunity for students who happen to miss breakfast before school.
Parents left their children confidently in the hands of school staff and gleaned with pride for their children who began the year as Aztecs, Tigers, Little Braves, and/or Braves. This year promises to be a year of productivity and many successes for all.
The Board of Trustees and District's administration would like to extend their gratitude to the teachers and support staff who worked so diligently to make the opening day smooth and memorable for all.
