Los Nietos School District Provides a 3rd-8th Grade Standardized Assessment Update on April 23, 2014

On March 31, 2014, 3rd through 8th grade students in the Los Nietos School District began taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) computer-delivered assessments. The SBAC test is part of the California Assessment of Performance and Progress program that replaced the STAR. These assessments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and intended for schools to test existing technology and practice the format of the test. Students results will not be produced this year related to the SBAC test.

To complete SBAC testing sessions, each school has a rotation schedule for classes to cycle through state of the art technology labs. Testing is comprised of two content areas, both English language arts and mathematics. Students complete approximately 25 questions in each content area and demonstrate understanding by completing multiple choice questions, dragging and dropping specific details, highlighting responses, selecting multiple items, and responding to short answer questions. A performance task in either English or mathematics follows a classroom activity wherein students respond in essay format to a problem-solving prompt. SBAC testing will end on May 16, 2014.

Other tests administered this spring are varied and have different timelines. Students in 5th and 7th grade are participating in the Physical Fitness Test during the month of April. The 6 fitness components include: aerobic capacity; body composition; abdominal strength and endurance; trunk extensor strength and flexibility; upper body strength and endurance; and flexibility. The 7th grade PE teachers from Los Nietos Middle School, Mr. Chavez and Mrs. Cojohn, have gone to each elementary school to support PE Testing and have enjoyed their work with future Los Nietos Braves. Beginning the week of April 28th, students in grades 5 and 8 will take the Science Content Standards Test. Testing will take up to two days. Our students in moderate severe Special Education classes in grades 2-8 who qualify to take the CAPA test will test from April 28th through May 9th in English language arts, math, and science (5th grade only).

By the way, the students at all four schools have maintained their focus throughout the new SBAC testing. It is clear that their teachers have prepared them to feel comfortable and at ease in their new technology labs.
