Comprehensive “Healthy Los Nietos” Update Given to the Los Nietos School Board on April 10, 2014

On April 10, 2014, the Los Nietos School Board of Trustees received a comprehensive update on the many health initiatives that were implemented this year as part of the Healthy Los Nietos Project. The highly successful collaboration between the Los Nietos School District and PIH Health began four years ago when Los Angeles County Public Health statistics indicated that children in the Los Nietos/West Whittier area ranked 113/128 in obesity prevalence among the 128 cities and communities in Los Angeles County. A ranking of 1 is the lowest and a ranking of 128 the highest.

At the Board meeting PIH Health educator, Ricardo Lopez, introduced the eight graduates of the Parents in Action advanced health training entitled “Vision and Compromiso”. Parents spoke to the Board about their willingness to participate on the District’s Wellness Committee and to help recruit other parents in the District in order to coordinate health education in the Los Nietos Community.

Principal Becky Speh then introduced the “CATCH Champions” at each of the four schools in the District, as they each spoke about the activities that took place as part of the “Step into Health Day" held on March 7, 2014.

Community Services Supervisor, Edmund Ramirez, then was introduced to speak about the joint collaborative Health Fair that is scheduled for May 10, 2014, at Rancho Santa Gertrudes School. The Health Fair is a collaborative between the City of Santa Fe Springs, PIH Health, and the Los Nietos School District. Over 20 community health vendors will be available to meet with the public and over 1,000 people are projected to attend.

Lastly, Superintendent Vasquez provided the Board with projected next steps in 2014-2015 as the plans are being developed to bring more health services to the Los Nietos Community at free or reduced cost. The Los Nietos School Board was impressed with comprehensive health efforts of parents, staff, and community partners and thanked everyone for their presentations.
