On January 18, 2014, the Whittier Daily News featured an article on a new mural that was commissioned by the Rancho Santa Gertrudes School Parent Teacher Club that promotes health and wellness. Muralist, Janine Hattas, is completing her second mural for Rancho Santa Gertrudes School, the first being a mural depicting the history of Santa Fe Springs, the Los Nietos School District, and Rancho Santa Gertrudes. That historical mural was made possible by a grant from the Santa Fe Springs Historical Society and the Santa Fe Springs Heritage Artwork in Public Places Program.
The student art club at Rancho Santa Gertrudes worked to develop a concept for the mural that depicted food that was “Slow, Whoa, or Go” foods, terms they had learned by having the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) curriculum taught district-wide this year. The official unveiling of the mural will take place on January 22, 2014, and will coincide with Rancho’s new salad bar being open for students to use in the school cafeteria at lunch. As part of a coordinated approach to dramatically transforming school nutrition in the Los Nietos School District, Director of Nutrition Services, Kurt Chou, has been implementing salad bars at all four of the schools in the Los Nietos School District as well as radically transforming the cafeteria menus in the District. Director Chou applied for grants that made possible the purchase of the salad bars at all four of the Los Nietos Schools.
