On January 14, 2014, the entire Los Nietos School District certificated staff came together for the second time with educational consultant, Paula Rutherford, to take part in further professional development in the, “Making the Common Core Come Alive” series. During the week of January 13th, over 60% of the Los Nietos School District teachers are scheduled to begin day one of a four -day intensive professional development series that will provide depth of understanding of how the Common Core Standards are different and similar to the California State Standards. Plans are in development to add an additional cohort so all Los Nietos Teachers have an opportunity to attend the four-day professional development.
Teachers from all four schools in the Los Nietos School District will be clustered together in two cohorts of between 25-30 this week as Paula helps teachers develop a repertoire of skills to teach and asses the diverse learners in their classroom. Additionally, core tenants of the “Making the Common Core Come Alive!” series include: using available data, both classroom and external, to make and assess instructional decisions; promoting high standards for both students and adults; and most importantly making a commitment to collaborate with colleagues and parents.
The Los Nietos School District Board of Trustees is committed to providing the Los Nietos School District’s instructional staff the technology, professional development, and materials necessary for successful Common Core implementation to meet the needs of all learners. Paula Rutherford is the President of Just Ask Publications, and has authored more than 12 books on instruction and student learning. Her professional development is an integral part of the Los Nietos School District’s commitment to insure that students and teachers are able to smoothly transition to the Common Core State Standards.
