Paula Rutherford, International Author, Staff Development Presenter, and President of Just ASK Publications, led the District-wide Professional Development Session for 80 Teachers in the Los Nietos School District on October 22, 2013
Paula Rutherford described to teachers her list of “Paula’s Top Ten Tips for Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century.” She shared key instructional strategies with participants about transitioning to the Common Core. Teachers had multiple opportunities to pause and process key information as she modeled “pausing to process” as part of mastery learning. By the end of the session, teachers created their own “Top Ten List” that they would share with new teachers for designing a top-notch instructional program.
Teachers were reminded of the learning shifts that are part of the Common Core that are also listed on the website, http://www.engageny.org/resource/shifts-for-students-and-parents .
These include:
ELA/Literacy Shifts in Plain English!
• Read as much non-fiction as fiction
• Learn about the world by reading
• Read more challenging material closely
• Discuss reading using evidence
• Write non-fiction using evidence – give text-based answers
• Increase academic vocabulary
Math Shifts in Plain English!
• Focus: learn more about fewer, key topics
• Build skills within and across grades
• Develop speed and accuracy
• Really know it – Really do it
• Use it in the real world
• Think fast AND solve problems
This year Paula Rutherford has partnered with the Los Nietos School District and will be working with the district administration, teachers, and Teacher Leaders from each site throughout the year to lead the teaching and learning as part of the Common Core teacher professional development plan.
