During the week of October 7-11th, the Los Nietos School District distributed free shoes to every student in the Los Nietos School District. Last year the District applied for a grant, which we were made aware of by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, to help support the homeless students in the District. By last year’s records there were over 400 students classified as either homeless or living in a doubled-up housing living environment in our district. In addition to the shoes for our homeless students, the grant allowed for all Title I students to be included in the grant application. As the Los Nietos School District is a Title I District, all District students became eligible for the free shoes upon parent permission.
The grant provides for two pairs of free shoes for every student in the Los Nietos School District. The first allocation of 2000 pairs of shoes arrived early last week, and through the combined efforts of district office personnel, district and site administration, and parent volunteers all shoes were distributed to students by the end of the week.
Students were ecstatic to receive the free shoes as their beaming smiles could be seen illuminating the classrooms at all four schools! The second allotment of 2000 pairs of shoes is expected to arrive no later than February of next year.
Superintendent Vasquez wanted to specifically thank the efforts of Los Nietos School Community Outreach Facilitator, Cristina Varela-Rivera, for her stellar effort to help apply, coordinate, and develop distribution procedures that effectively and seamlessly delivered the shoes to the students in the Los Nietos School District. Superintendent Vasquez also wished to thank all of the classroom teachers and school office personnel who helped insure all students received the correct shoe sizes.
