Los Nietos Parents Attend Free Parent Education Classes on October 9, 2013

On October 9, 2013, over 30 Los Nietos parents attended the first in a series of free parent education classes held at the Los Nietos School District Office by the PROedu program. Superintendent Vasquez welcomed the parents in attendance, and thanked them for attending the classes. He expressed that the Los Nietos School Board is committed to providing learning opportunities for parents so they can better partner with the school system to better prepare their children for higher education. Over the summer the Los Nietos School Board approved a contract with the PROedu program to provide the parent education classes free to Los Nietos Parents. Superintendent Vasquez stated if parents had any questions during the year while attending the classes and needed clarification about their child’s school or district to please let him know. He said he would be happy to come back with the school principals to answer any questions the parents might have.

PROedu is a project that began in 2002 as a result of parent participation in MALDEF’s (Mexican American Legal Defense Educational Fund) Parent School Partnership Program (PSP). The PROedu curriculum in based on the PSP curriculum and has been used extensively in the Whittier area to help promote parent involvement and empowerment. Graduates of the PROedu classes tend to serve on school committees and councils (PTA, School Site Council, English Language Learner Advisory Council), learn skills and strategies to help advocate for their children, and learn the necessary requirements their children need to possess in order to graduate high school and gain entrance into college.

The first class explained the importance of having a strong family structure in order to better support all family members to achieve their potential. The classes, which are held primarily in Spanish, are held every Wednesday at the Los Nietos School District Office beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 10:30 a.m.
