Superintendent Jonathan Vasquez Welcomes Parents and Staff to the 2013/2014 School Year on August 19, 2013.

Dear Parents and Staff,

I’d like to welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year. As the Superintendent of the Los Nietos School District, I am excited to be entering my fifth year as Superintendent of this wonderful district. For the last 22 years I have had the opportunity to work in one of the oldest elementary school districts in the State of California. I invite you to visit our District website often so you can learn about the ways in which we are committed to academic excellence. As you visit the district and school websites, you will learn about what makes the Los Nietos School District unique and how we pride ourselves on nurturing the development of every child’s academic, social, and emotional potential. To that end, free breakfast and lunch is offered to all of our students despite family income level. To view the many outstanding things we are doing for our students in our School Nutrition Department, please visit the department's new website regularly.

The implementation of a rigorous academic instructional program in all grades, K-8, is a priority for the Los Nietos School District. As we enter the 2013-2014 school year, the Los Nietos staff is preparing to transition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and preparing our students to be successful on the Smarter Balanced Assessments. Our District staff is extremely proud of increasing our Academic Performance Index (API) score for the past 5 years. Our 2013 California Standards Test Score results indicate areas of strength and areas for improvement that our dedicated teachers and district staff will be focusing on this year. Our four schools are looking forward to this transition year, as the instructional collaboration that is becoming a hallmark of our district will continue in preparation for successful CCSS implementation in 2014.

We know education is the great equalizer in life, and the K-8 instructional program we offer at Los Nietos is rigorous and prepares our students to be successful throughout high school and into college. The teachers and staff of Los Nietos work hard on behalf of the students because, along with their parents, we share the desire that students are prepared to attend and graduate from the college of their choice. In Los Nietos we offer free parent education opportunities throughout the school year. Through collaborative negotiations with our teachers, support staff, and administrators, we have been able to maintain the integral instructional practices that have helped increase student achievement across the district, despite significant State budget cuts to our District’s instructional programs the past several years.

Los Nietos is always looking for ways to strengthen and build new partnerships and explore different funding opportunities for the benefit of our students. The “Healthy Los Nietos Project” is a collaborative partnership between the Los Nietos School District, Whittier Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, and the Whittier Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. The Healthy Los Nietos partnership has been able to gain grants and additional funding that has improved, invigorated, and provided innovative ways at looking at student, staff, and parent health education. Currently medical residents from PIH provide collaborative discussions with students, parents, and staff regarding ways to incorporate healthy eating habits and exercise into their lifestyles.

During the 2009-2010 school year, through the help of Congresswoman Linda Sanchez’s office, Los Nietos received a $190,000.00 grant for services from i-SAFE, Inc. This organization is a non-profit foundation, which provided anti-bullying programs, internet safety programs and training to all four schools in the Los Nietos School District. Additionally our partnership with the Think Together program to provide free after school tutoring from 3:00 P.M. – to 6:00 P.M. at all four school sites will again be provided this year.

The District’s Board of Trustees works closely with all elected officials who have Los Nietos in their jurisdiction toward the support of the students and their families in the community. Our district works collaboratively with the cities of Santa Fe Springs and Whittier, as well as the Whittier Union High School District to provide information for parents and students which enables them to be informed participants in their communities. Additionally, we work with the Los Nietos More Advocates for Safe Homes (MASH) organization to share information regarding the Los Nietos Community.

Each one of the staff at Los Nietos takes seriously the trust parents place in us to educate their children. As the Superintendent, I feel confident that if you visit our schools and talk with our principals, you will know as I do that Los Nietos is a district that prides itself on working collaboratively with parents to help them achieve their children’s potential. For 152 years the Los Nietos School District has been an operating district in California. I hope you visit our schools and our website often to learn more about our wonderful district as we enter our 153rd year of educating the students of the Los Nietos Community.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Vasquez
Superintendent
