Los Nietos School Board Welcomes Staff back to the 2013-2014 School Year on August 13, 2013

On August 13, 2013, Superintendent Vasquez and the Los Nietos School Board of Trustees welcomed the Los Nietos Staff back and wished them well as they embarked on the new 2013-2014 school year. The Los Nietos School Board has a tradition of inviting the staff to a “Welcome Back Breakfast” and thanking them publicly for the outstanding job each of them do to insure that Los Nietos students receive a quality education.

On each table were flowerpot centerpieces with the words written on them,
“Together We Grow Stronger”. This year the Los Nietos educators will continue their transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with full implementation taking place in 2014. What will continue to be stressed this year as the curriculum is being re-written is teacher collaboration. Teachers at all four sites will continue working together on staff development Tuesdays, and sharing the best instructional ideas to help students master the new CCSS. Superintendent Vasquez also reviewed the projected results of the 2013 California Standards Tests. The 2013 results showed areas of strength, growth, and areas of focus this year at all four of our schools.

Superintendent Vasquez along with trustees, Marisa B. Hernandez, Nick Aquino, Ray Chacon, Art Escobedo and Silvia Monge also gave thanks to the sponsors of the event. Maria-Elena Romero and Edgar Paz were recognized and thanked for their outstanding work managing the facilities projects in the district and for their continual sponsorship of district events

School Nutrition Director, Kurt Chou, spoke of the many exciting things happening this year at all four school cafeterias. This year there will be salad bars at Aeolian and Los Nietos Middle School as well as many new and delectable dishes that will be provided to the students building on the new menu that was created by Director Chou last year. Fresh fruit and vegetables will be offered on a continuous basis thanks to a new grant that Director Chou was able to procure for the Los Nietos School District.

Superintendent Vasquez introduced Monica Quiroz, 2013-2014 Los Nietos Teacher of the Year, and she addressed the room on the importance of having teachers and adults during her childhood and in her 10-year professional career in Los Nietos inspire her to become the best teacher she could be and strive for excellence in the classroom. Her speech extolled the virtues of encouraging students, helping them feel special and capable during the school year, and the importance of giving back and sharing what you have learned. Her speech concluded with a standing ovation from the audience, and a warm embrace from her husband and two daughters in attendance.

As is the custom of the Welcome Back Breakfast, Superintendent Vasquez along with the Board of Trustees awarded years of services pins to the employees.

Additionally Superintendent Vasquez acknowledged and thanked the Los Nietos schools for their hard work on behalf of a very grateful Los Nietos School Board.
