Nelson School Celebrates an Outstanding Grandparents Day on April 17, 2013

On Wednesday, April 17th, more than 160 grandparents filled the cafeteria at Nelson Elementary to celebrate the first annual “Grandparents Day”. Staff and students were encouraged to wear pirate attire to support this year’s literacy theme: “There’s treasure buried in every book.”

Principal Marla Duncan began the day by warmly welcoming the grandparents in attendance. Grandparents had the opportunity to eat breakfast with their grandchildren, participate in activities with their grandchildren in the cafeteria, and visit the school’s book fair, where they were encouraged to take pictures with their grandchildren.

Each year Nelson School’s Parent Teacher Club raises money to support activities through their annual “Spring Book Fair Event”. Grandparents gladly supported the event as they perused the aisles of books with their excited grandchildren.

“We had three times more grandparents than expected,” said Principal Duncan, but we were so glad they came.” She said the school embraced the pirate theme a lot more than she anticipated. “Students, staff and even grandparents came dressed,” she said.

Nelson’s book fair continues through Friday, April 19th.
