Los Nietos MIddle School SRLA Students Participate in 2013 Los Angeles Marathon on 3/17/13

On March 17, 2013, the Los Nietos Middle School Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA) Team boarded a bus at 5:03 a.m. and traveled to participate in the Honda Los Angeles Marathon. Parents, Principal Cardenas, and Superintendent Vasquez cheered the students and staff advisors as they left the Los Nietos Middle School campus and boarded their bus to participate in an event they have trained for all year. At the start of the 2012-2013 school year, SRLA students made a commitment to run three times per week with each run being between three and ten miles long. Los Nietos Middle School is the only school east of the 605 Freeway to offer this outstanding SRLA marathon-training program. Thousands of students from the Los Angeles area participate in SRLA that promotes physical fitness, discipline, and goal setting.

In addition to running three times a week, SRLA students participated in two running events this year. On January 12, 2013, SRLA students participated in the Irvine ½ marathon, and the 18-mile Friendship Run at the Hansen Dam on February 10, 2013.

The Los Nietos School Board is extremely thankful that Lead Coach and SRLA Coordinator, Erika Rose, devoted so much of her time and energy to the Los Nietos students this year. In addition, special thanks is given to staff and committed coaches, Linda Cojohn, William Chavez, Carlee Ann Moyer, Patricia Baldelomar, and Principal Cardenas for her support of the SRLA program. Aeolian staff member, Christina Fontenot, also ran with the students and participated in the marathon.

Coach Chavez had additional incentive to complete the marathon in a timely manner as he was looking forward to celebrating his birthday and enjoying a big slice of birthday cake with his family later in the evening.
