Los Nietos Bell Hoisted onto its Final Resting Place on August 31, 2012

The Los Nietos Middle School’s summer construction project is rapidly coming to a close in anticipation of the start of school on September 6, 2012. The Los Nietos Middle School has been undergoing construction as part of the Measure M Bond Initiative. The Measure M Bond Initiative asked Los Nietos residents to authorize the Los Nietos School District to “upgrade classrooms and security, improve safety and school sites, renovate outdated restrooms, and replace roofs by issuing up to $31,140,000.00 in bonds”. The Los Nietos Middle School being the largest school in the district required the most extensive and time-consuming work.

Earlier this summer the project focused on replacing underground pipes, wiring, and plumbing fixtures. Of greatest importance this summer was the single point of entry created at the front of the school, which will ensure added safety and security for all students and staff throughout the day. Now in the final stages of completion, sod has been put down in the front of the school and the final school gates are being welded into place.

When completed there will be a nice courtyard that proudly displays the original Los Nietos school bell that was created at the McShane Bell Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland in 1889. The bell, which weighs several hundred pounds, was hoisted using heavy machinery onto its new base where it will proudly remain as the symbol of the Los Nietos School District.

Surrounding the historic Los Nietos schoolhouse bell will be engraved alumni pavers. Already alumni from as far back as 1951 have purchased pavers with their name and the year they graduated engraved on them. Alumni have expressed a profound love for the school they attended that was once called the “Los Nietos School”. For information on how to purchase an alumni paver (proceeds to benefit the Los Nietos Middle School technology department), please contact (562) 692-0271 X3212.
