On June 14, 2012, the City of Santa Fe Springs City Council recognized 2011 Los Nietos School District Teacher of the Year, Ms. Denise Duran. Accompanying Ms. Duran to the ceremony were Rancho Santa Gertrudes School Principal, Octavio Perez, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, Dr. Mary McNeil. Both Mr. Perez and Dr. McNeil thanked the City Council for recognizing Ms. Duran, and then gave brief testimonials about her contributions as a Los Nietos Teacher before posing for pictures.
At the City Council Meeting Principal Perez spoke the following comments about Ms. Duran’s contributions as a teacher.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ms. Duran is one of the most well liked teachers on our staff. She is flexible, cooperative, and shows a willingness to share ideas while bringing out the best in other people. We are very lucky to have her with us each day! She is the kind of teacher that sees students individual needs and strengths and strives to provide each student with the proper academic challenges according to his/her abilities. Ms. Duran has an exceptional ability to create a classroom atmosphere charged with enthusiasm and a love of learning. Her students are always actively engaged in the daily lessons and demonstrate a deep respect and fondness for Ms. Duran as a person, and as their teacher.
Without fail, you can find students in her classroom before school, during lunch and after school hours. Her room is a place where these children feel welcomed and cared for. It is so endearing to see these students forming such a strong bond with an adult, as well as with fellow peers. They are never made to feel different due to their academic abilities; rather she ensures that ALL students have the same experiences and opportunities as the rest of the student body.
Just the other day, I had the chance to speak to her students about Ms. Duran’s teaching. One of the young men proudly spoke up, and shared with me, “quote” she is “the best teacher. She always makes me feel better and that I am someone special.” (end quote). I think that says it all!
I am proud to work with Ms. Duran each and every day and am honored to be here tonight as she receives this award that she most definitely deserves, and has earned. Congratulations, Ms. Duran, our Teacher of the Year.
