Rancho Santa Gertrudes School Wins "Battle of the Books" Competition for the Second Year in a Row on June 1, 2012

On June 1, 2012, Rancho Santa Gertrude School representing the Los Nietos School District won for the second year in a row the annual “Battle of the Books” competition against the Little Lake School District. The “Battle of the Books” competition has been an annual event that has been sponsored by the Santa Fe Springs Library featuring teams from several Little Lake Schools and Rancho Santa Gertrudes, the only Los Nietos School within the boundaries of Santa Fe Springs. In preparation for the singe elimination event competing teams needed to have read 30 selected books and be prepared to answer the questions posed to them by naming the title and author of the book correctly.

For many years Rancho had been an annual participant in the “Battle of the Books” competition, but was unable to achieve a top three finish against the extremely strong schools in the Little Lake School District. Last year however, Rancho finally had a break out year and won the competition. Hoping to replicate last year’s first place finish student advisors Mrs. Emily Coutant and Mrs. Claudia Gonzales worked with their dedicated group of students to form two strong teams that were entered into this year’s competition.

For the first time since the “Battle of the Books” competition began, two teams from the same school made the finals. Rancho’s two teams (“One Book or Another”, and “The Book Worms”) competed against each other in the finals with “The Book Worms” winning the very competitive finals match.

The Rancho teams were supported and cheered by parents, teachers, staff, district administration, Los Nietos School Board members, and Principal Octavio Perez.

Congratulations to the students, teachers, and parents who helped prepare and support the Rancho Team winning the "2012 Battle of the Books” competition for the second straight year!
