On May 31, 2012, Ada S. Nelson School hosted their annual “Nelson Oratorical” event. For over twenty years Nelson School students have participated in the “Oratorical” event as part of the California Visual and Performing Arts standards. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade were required to learn a poem, recite it from memory, and perform the poem with expression, movements, and depth of understanding. All students were given certificates of participation and awards were given in each grade level for the top three performances.
Principal Marla Duncan and Dr. Kim Palmer, classroom teacher, acted as the Masters of Ceremonies for the event, which last several hours, and was performed before students, staff, parents, and community members.
The Oratorical judges had a difficult time determining the top three performances in each grade level, as all student performances were outstanding. Judges for the event were Superintendent Vasquez, School Board President Art Escobedo, and Nelson Counseling Intern, Michelle Lobos.
