Ada S. Nelson School Highlights Reading Initiatives at the Los Nietos School Board Meeting on 5/24/12

At the May 24, 2012 Los Nietos School Board Meeting Principal Marla Duncan gave a presentation about the yearlong literacy initiatives at Ada S. Nelson School. Principal Duncan explained that this year the Nelson staff created a reading initiative that challenged students to read 1,000,000 pages. Principal Duncan challenged students and staff to reach the “million pages goal” by purchasing popular books for the school library, having students set reading goals, and encouraging teachers to utilize school library time this year.

Principal Duncan who was joined by over 60 parents, students, and staff explained to the Board of Trustees how Nelson School kicked-off their Literacy Week with “Muffins with Mom” on Monday morning, April 16, and “Donuts with Dad” on Thursday morning, April 19th. The culminating event happened on April 20th at the “Literacy Luau” where students were recognized for their reading achievements, and participated in Reader’s Theatre, and Book Talks. Additionally there was also “Create-a-Book Workshops” for parents and children.

After her presentation was completed Mrs. Duncan took questions from the school board about the reading initiatives at her school. The Board of Trustees then thanked Mrs. Duncan, the parents, the staff, and the students in attendance for their hard work and dedication to making reading such a high priority at Nelson School.
