Ada S. Nelson School Celebrates Literacy Luau on April 19, 2012

On April 20, 2012, Nelson School capped off a weeklong celebration of the student’s reading achievements by hosting a “Literacy Luau” for the students and parents of Nelson School. This week the school recognized student participation in the Reading Initiative that was set in place this year by the school staff and has shown improved student reading levels and increased overall reading at the school.

This year Principal Marla Duncan set forth on creating an initiative that challenged students to read 1,000,000 pages. Principal, Marla Duncan challenged the students and staff to reach the “million pages goal” by purchasing popular books for the school library, having students set reading goals, and encouraging teachers to utilize school library time.

Nelson School kicked-off their Literacy Week with “Muffins with Mom” on Monday morning, April 16, and “Donuts with Dad” on Thursday morning, April 19th. The culminating event happened on April 20th at the “Literacy Luau” where students were recognized for their reading achievements, and participated in Reader’s Theatre, and Book Talks. There was also “Create-a-Book Workshops” for parents and children. Families were encouraged to visit the school’s Scholastic Book Fair, which also took place this week. Principal Duncan hopes that the summer book purchases would keep students reading throughout the summer. “Those who participate in our summer reading challenge will be recognized when they return in September by having their faces posted on our Reading Wall of Fame,” she said, “and of course the ever popular ice cream party.” Pictures of the April 19, 2012, “Literacy Luau” are posted on the right.
