On February 23, 2012 the Whittier Area School Administrators held their annual Community Service Awards Breakfast to honor local heroes making a difference in the lives of children. The Los Nietos School District was pleased to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Erika Gonzalez and her tireless volunteer work at Ada S. Nelson School.
Mrs. Gonzalez attends and participates at the monthly “Coffee with the Principal” meetings and voices suggestions or concerns on behalf of other parents who are unable to attend. She serves on the Ada S. Nelson School Site Council, English Language Advisory Committee, and is a representative on the District English Language Advisory Committee. She also recently agreed to serve for two years on the Los Nietos School District Bond Oversight Committee.
Mrs. Gonzalez faithfully attends all school functions and volunteers to do whatever needs to be done, be it serving hot dogs and punch at events, sweeping the floors after the Family Movie Night, or working a booth at the yearly school carnival. In the morning she volunteers to direct traffic as parents drop their children off at school, and then volunteers to work in her sons’ classrooms to support their teachers.
Erika Gonzalez repeatedly has expressed her desire to have her 5 sons attend and graduate from college. To model the importance of education to her children, this year she attended parent education classes at both her children’s schools. Her peers in the Parent Institute for Quality Education Classes validated her enthusiasm for learning by selecting her to be their class spokesperson at both school sites during graduation ceremonies.
Mrs. Gonzalez frequently meets with Principal Marla Duncan to express her ideas to improve academics and safety not only for her children, but also for all students at Ada S. Nelson School. Her input and leadership is valued and appreciated by all of the Los Nietos School District Community.
