Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Teachers at Rancho Santa Gertrudes School and Los Nietos Middle School Receive CATCH Training on 2/9/12

On February 9, 2012, the Los Nietos Middle School teaching staff and the sixth grade teachers from Rancho Santa Getrudes School attended a daylong training on the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program. The CATCH training was an interactive, hands-on workshop that blended the knowledge and practical skills necessary to implement the CATCH Program. Training covered the rationale and need for improving children’s health, an overview of the CATCH Program, component-specific overview using the CATCH resource materials, and strategic planning for successful implementation utilizing the CATCH Coordination Guide.

This year the Los Nietos School District has partnered with Whittier Presbyterian Hospital in an effort to augment the health education and physical fitness of the students, parents, and staff at both Rancho Santa Gertrudes and Los Nietos Middle School. Presbyterian Hospital medical residents as part of their community practicum training have been providing instruction to the parents, staff and 6th-8th grade students all year. A hospital grant made it possible for the CATCH training to take place and to pay for the substitutes to cover the 22 participants. It is hoped that in the very near future the work and services that are being provided at Los Nietos Middle School and Rancho Santa Gertrudes School will be able to be implemented at the other two school sites in the district.
