Los Nietos School District and Presbyterian Hospital Begin a New Community Partnership on 9/14/11

On September 13, 2011, teachers from the Los Nietos Middle School and Rancho Santa Gertrudes School welcomed medical professionals from Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, California to a joint planning meeting. The Los Nietos School District is entering into a new community partnership with Presbyterian Hospital to provide the hospital’s residents with a community practicum experience at Rancho Santa Gertrudes School and the Los Nietos Middle School. Under the supervision of Dr. Ingrid Patsch and Dr. Virag Shah, the community practicum experience is designed to give the medical residents more practical experience and knowledge working with members of the Whittier/Santa Fe Springs community. In addition to Dr. Shah and Dr. Patsch, Kimberlee Van Der Kolk (Nurse Practioner), Nancy White (Director Community Education, Senior & Volunteer Services), Jannette E. Lupercio (Community Health Educator), and Nancy Clifton-Hawkins (Principal Consultant from Clifton-Hawkins and Associates) were present to explain the hopes of the new partnership.

Due to the Santa Fe Springs area having one of the highest childhood obesity rates in Los Angeles County, the City of Santa Fe Springs has been looking for ways to provide some support/education in the community. The new partnership is an outgrowth in a childhood obesity study that has been in the planning phases for the past couple of years between the Los Nietos School District, Presbyterian Hospital, and the City of Santa Fe Springs.

Superintendent Jonathan Vasquez, Los Nietos Middle School Principal Jacqueline Cardenas, and Rancho Santa Gertrudes Principal, Octavio Perez, pledged their support to the teachers and medical residents in attendance in order to make the practicum experience beneficial to all parties involved.
