Rancho Santa Gertrudes School Celebrates "National Protect Your Groundwater Day" on September 13, 2011

On September 13, 2011, Rancho Santa Gertrudes School celebrated “Protect Your Groundwater Day” by hosting an assembly with members of the community and representatives of the Water Replenishment District (WRD), Lillian Kawasaki and Albert Robles. Over 100 4th grade and kindergarten students listened to WRD Directors Kawaski and Robles talk about the importance of protecting our groundwater supply so everyone can continue to have fresh drinking water. Also attending the ceremony were Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, Santa Fe Springs Mayor Joe Serrano, and representatives from Congresswoman Grace Napolitano office.

Superintendent Vasquez with the help of the guest speakers led the students through the Acknowledge, Consider and Take Action (A.C.T.) Pledge to protect and conserve southern Los Angeles County’s groundwater supplies.
Started by the National Ground Water Association, Protect Your Groundwater Day focuses on positive actions that individuals can take to protect and preserve groundwater for human use and the environment.
Rancho Santa Gertrudes students learned that groundwater is the largest source of drinking water in the United States and the world. Nearly 40 percent of southern Los Angeles County’s water supplies come from two groundwater basins that span more than 400 square-miles. At the end of the ceremony students were given gift bags by the WRD.
