The Los Nietos School District Achieves an API Score of 780 and its Sixth Straight Year of Double-Digit API Growth!

On August 31, 2011, California's Academic Performance Index (API) results for 2011 were released. The Los Nietos School District for the sixth straight year posted double-digit API growth! The 2011 District API score of 780 is the highest API for the District, and is close to the state’s target score of 800.

The Los Nietos School Board extends congratulations to the staffs and students of Ada S. Nelson (777 API score) and Aeolian School (786 API score). A special congratulation goes to Rancho Santa Gertrudes School for receiving a 2011 API score of 800 and growing +27 API points and to the Los Nietos Middle School for receiving a 2011 API score of 774 and growing +36 API points.

"I want to congratulate the students, teachers and staffs at all four of our schools for their outstanding showing," said Superintendent Jonathan Vasquez. "What is particularly impressive is the growth that has come despite several years of historic budget cuts."

The Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measure is used by the federal Department of Education to determine if a school or district meets the act's annual growth standards; those that do not are placed on Program Improvement after two years. In order to be identified as a Program Improvement school, the school must receive federal Title I funds. Of the 6,157 school that receive federal Title I funds, 3,892 (63%) were identified as Program Improvement in 2011. Additionally, there were 932 schools that entered into the program for the first time in 2011. Aeolian and Ada S. Nelson were identified in that group although the math scores at both schools exceeded the state average of 58% proficient or above. Aeolian and Ada S. Nelson exceeded the state Mathematics average of 48.7% for English Language Learners by as much as 16% (Nelson Math ELL/AYP= 64.8%, Aeolian Math ELL/AYP= 61.9%).

Rancho Santa Gertrudes and the Los Nietos Middle School were not identified as Program Improvement schools. Rancho’s overall Mathematics AYP score of 61.2% also exceeded the State Schoolwide and English Language Learner Mathematics AYP averages.
