Los Nietos School District Meets to Discuss "Arts for All" Coordination on March 30, 2011

On March 30, 2011, the Los Nietos School District conducted a coordinated planning meeting to discuss the results of the Visual and Performing Arts Survey that was given to all of the teachers in the Los Nietos School District. The Community Arts Team (CAT) met to discuss the findings and discuss ways the four schools in the Los Nietos School District could begin re-emphasing Arts education in the schools. This year the Los Nietos School District was fortunate to receive a $20,000.00 planning grant from the LA County Arts Commission. With this money coaching has taken place to plan and coordinate an Arts program for the students of the Los Nietos School District.

Under the direction of Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary McNeil, stakeholders from all four schools met to brainstorm what an "Arts Program" in the Los Nietos School District might look like. Each of the District's four principals facilitated the discussion and helped build consensus among the stakeholders. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for April 13, 2011.

Listed below is below is some history on the Arts for All Blueprint for Arts Education.

In September 2002, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors adopted Arts for All: Los Angeles County Blueprint for Arts Education, a strategic plan to restore arts education - in dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts - to the 1.6 million students in Los Angeles County's 81 school districts.

Arts for All provides a series of policy changes and educational initiatives to create systemic change and institutionalize sequential, K-12 arts education in Los Angeles County school districts, based on the Visual and Performing Arts Standards for California Public Schools. The Blueprint proposes that systemic change can only occur through the commitment and involvement of every stakeholder group, and identifies the steps each stakeholder can take in its Call to Action Chart.

The initiative is led by the Arts for All Executive Committee and is managed by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. More than 100 organizations, including the Los Angeles County Office of Education, work in partnership to meet the goals and strategies contained in the Blueprint.

The four areas that advance strategies to ensure high quality arts education are
1. Establish a Strong Foundation and Deepen School District Capacity to Implement Arts Education
2. Improve Quality of Teaching and Learning
3. Create and Empower Advocates and Conduct Ongoing Research and Evaluation
4. Ensure Sustainable Funding Partnerships for Arts Education
