Ada S. Nelson School and Aeolian School Recognized as California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) "Star Schools" on March 25, 2011

On March 25, 2011, the California Business for Education Excellence announced the 2010 academic Honor Roll. The Los Nietos School District is proud to announce that Ada S. Nelson School and Aeolian School were recognized as “2010 Star Schools” by the California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE). The CBEE Honor Roll identifies and recognizes the highest performing public schools in California that are consistently raising academic achievement and reducing achievement gaps so that others can learn from their best practices. The Criteria for being recognized placed on the academic Honor Roll and being identified as a CBEE Star School is listed below.

2010 CBEE Stars Criteria

The CBEE Stars are schools that have a significant population of students that are
socio-economically disadvantaged and that are closing achievement gaps and
increasing proficiency rates. The list includes schools that are closing gaps in each
subgroup in both language arts and mathematics.

1. In order to be included in the CBEE Stars, a school must meet a set of criteria for
each major subgroup. Subgroups are considered major subgroups if:
• The group has greater than 10 students in the subgroup in 2009 and 2010.
• In 2010, the group was identified by the California Department of Education
(CDE) as a significant subgroup for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

2. A linear regression was calculated for the percentage of a specific subgroup vs. the
proficiency percentage of that subgroup. CBEE Stars have proficiency rates that are
at least at least at the mean in each subgroup in both English/Language Arts and
Mathematics. However these schools are usually far exceeding the mean for every
subgroup.

3. For each major subgroup the school must show one of the following in both
English/Language Arts and Math:
• The proficiency rate increased from 2007 to 2010.
• The proficiency percentages were above 75% in 2010.

4. For each major subgroup, a school could not decline more than 10 percentage
points in English Language Arts or Mathematics in 2010.

5. To be included, a school must meet Adequate Yearly Progress in both
English/Language Arts and Mathematics in either 2009 or 2010 and must not be in
Program Improvement.

6. Finally, to be included, the school-wide percentage of socioeconomic disadvantaged
students must be 33.3% or greater.

A panel of professional education researchers validated the criteria.
Borderline schools or those with data anomalies were juried for inclusion.
