At the March 9, 2011 Los Nietos School Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees recognized the outstanding accomplishments made by Ada S. Nelson, Aeolian, and Rancho Santa Gertrudes Schools at the 2011 Los Angeles County Science Olympiad. In attendance at the meeting was Aeolian's Silver medal winning team with their advisor, Diana Mireles.

At the conclusion of Mrs. Duncan's presentation the Aeolian and Ada S. Nelson students and their parents were invited to share cake with the Board of Trustees as both schools accomplishments were celebrated.

Listed below is Mrs. Duncan's presentation about Ada S. Nelson's participation in the Los Angeles County Science Olympiad.

Ada S. Nelson School has been participating in the Science Olympiad since 2003. Our first year we won a Bronze medal. That year there were 30 schools competing for the gold, now there are 48. The number of points each school must earn has also increased over the past 9 years.

Mrs. Etherton and Mr. Jauregui trained the 2005 Science Olympiad team, that was the year we earned our first GOLD. Mrs. Gachett joined the team in 2006 and each year the three of them have trained the student line-up. This year Mr. Corona joined the collaboration as Mr. Jauregui has moved to the middle school.

Students are invited to join the Science Olympiad team with training beginning upon our return from winter vacation. The squad meets three times a week until the competition takes place in late February or early March.

Students begin making projects and participating in hands-on activities in January so that the teachers can determine who would be the best candidates to compete in specific challenges.

Students are also selected to study more about topics in which they are interested in learning about such as ornithology (the study of birds), anatomy, bugs, oceanogrophy, etc. They have three weeks to learn all they can.

Finally, the last few weeks are spent perfecting the projects or structures that must be built, rehearsing timing and practicing, researching, making flash cards and just studying the information.

I believe it is the passion and knowledge of the students and the dedication and patience of the teachers that has helped Ada S. Nelson school bring home 5 Gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals during our 9 years of participation. Thank you students and teachers for making Nelson shine.
