LNSD 2019 Summer Recap

Dear Los Nietos Community Members,

Summer vacation for our students is quickly coming to an end and I am looking forward to seeing you and your children on the first day of school, which will be Thursday, August 15th. As I reflect on the months of June and July, I am pleased that once again we were able to complete another successful summer school session on June 28th. Our students benefited from photography lessons, STEAM curriculum, hands-on science activities, and much more. We ended our summer school session with Field Day, our annual summer event where students enjoy a variety of activities including jumpers, sporting events, and obstacle courses.

We have been extremely busy this summer with the modernization of our second school, Ada S. Nelson. Once completed in 2020, Nelson will be the second school in our district after the Los Nietos Middle School that will have completed modernization of the school classrooms, facilities, and external painting. I am pleased to announce that Dr. LaTanya Reeves has been hired to lead Ada S. Nelson School as the new Principal. Dr. Reeves is excited to have the opportunity to be the Principal of a California Distinguished School, and I know she will be very successful as she continues the work of former Principal Marla Duncan who retired last year.

Our school offices will be open on August 1st, but if you have any questions about school registration you can come to the Los Nietos School District Office or call us directly at (562) 692-0271 ext. 3220 or 3212.  I wish you and your families in the Los Nietos community a wonderful rest of the summer, and we are looking forward to seeing you on August 15th.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Vasquez
Superintendent

Science Field Day at Rancho Santa Gertrudes

Through our strategic partnership with the Youth Science Center, we hosted Science Field Day. This fun-filled day had students participating in activities that applied science to their daily lives. They experimented and tested solutions until they found the perfect one to make bubbles and silly putty; they learned about the anatomy of a stick bug, created magic sand, and even practiced their entomology skills by searching for different insects around our school campus.

Los Nietos is committed to providing our students with a high-quality technology and science education that will prepare them for in-demand careers, and we thank the Youth Science Center for being part of this effort.

Los Nietos Middle School Highlights

Our middle school also hosted a Science Field Day in partnership with the Youth Science Center. Our students became budding entomologists; they held and observed crickets; reaction time to a dropping yard stick. They also created long chain polymers, learned about orthopods, and much more.

Hands-on learning and experimentation engage more of our students’ learning capabilities and provide them the opportunity to get out of the classroom and see real-world scientific and technological applications. Performing these experiments also makes science more approachable to our students and gives them the confidence to see themselves in those science and technology fields. Our District is committed to making these experiences accessible to all Los Nietos students.

Registration Day is August 9, 2019. Families should have received registration packets in the mail with further details. If you did not receive a registration packet, please bring proof of address to Los Nietos Middle School for your materials. PE clothes and locks will be on sale during registration. Student schedules will be distributed as paperwork is completed.

Ada S. Nelson Welcomes New Principal

A welcome reception was held on Wednesday, July 3rd to officially introduce Dr. LaTanya Reeves as the new principal at Ada S. Nelson Elementary School.

Dr. Reeves is a native southern Californian who went away in 1990, to attend college in the southeast. As an undergraduate student, she worked as an elementary substitute teacher and found her passion for teaching others. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, she relocated to Georgia where she served as an elementary teacher for six years, earned her Master's Degree in Adult Education, an Educational Specialist's Degree in Educational Leadership, became an instructional coach, and a school administrator. Throughout her years as an administrator, she served as an assistant principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and led instruction in many diverse learning environments. She returned to California in 2017, joined LAUSD as an assistant principal, and completed her doctoral studies in December 2018.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Reeves join the Los Nietos family!
