Los Nietos Schools Begin Safe and Civil School Foundation Training on November 10, 2015

On November 10, 2015 all four schools in the Los Nietos School District sent their Safe and Civil School Foundations Teams to participate in the first of four meetings that will take place this year to analyze how to better structure the school environment for school success for both the students and adults. On August 5th, teachers and instructional assistants learned the foundation principles of the Safe and Civil Schools program as Superintendent Vasquez explained the District is entering into a three-year commitment designed to structure the inside and outside classroom environments in a way that will maximize student learning.

The Safe and Civil Schools program is a research-proven positive behavior approach designed to help students understand adults’ clear expectations and respond in a respectful manner. The program uses the acronym S.T.O.I.C. to describe the steps necessary for student success: Structure for success; Teach behavioral expectations to students; Observe and supervise; Interact positively with students; and Correct fluently. Each school sent teams of 6-8 staff members who participated in the first of four days of training this year. The objective of the first day’s meeting was to share information concerning the identification of problem areas at each school, make suggestions for improvement, and prepare staff to proactively manage student behavior in a positive, consistent, and calm manner.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Safe and Civil School Trainer, Mike Booher, provided directions for completing the next steps for each school site team to complete before next month’s Safe and Civil Schools Foundation Team meeting.
