Los Nietos Board of Trustees Approve Joint-Use Agreement with the County of Los Angeles Paving way for the Building of a New LA County Library at the Los Nietos Middle School on April 23, 2015

At the April 23rd, 2015 Los Nietos School Board Meeting, a joint-use agreement between the Los Nietos School District and the County of Los Angeles was approved by the Los Nietos School Board paving the way for the construction of a new Los Angeles County Library to be built at the Los Nietos Middle School field at the corner of Duchess Avenue and Slauson Boulevard. Discussions between the Los Nietos School District and County of Los Angeles began in May of 2014 but began to really come together in January of 2015 when drafts of the Joint-Use Agreement began to be formalized from the many hours of discussions. The negotiations between the County and District were professional, cordial, and in the end the agreement that was crafted was a “true” joint-use agreement allowing both the District and County to make use of the new $7 million dollar facility.

The District will be able to have access to the library an hour before it opens to the general public allowing Los Nietos students the ability to visit the library and check-out their books before the library is opened to the Los Nietos Community at large. Additionally the District will have access to the new state of the art conference room that will have the capability of accommodating up to 70 participants. Currently the Los Nietos School District offers free parent education classes (due in part to the community partnerships with PIH Health, Rio Hondo College, and the Healthy Los Nietos Program) and hosts the classes in the Los Nietos Board room. With the ability to use the library conference room, the district will be able to expand the classes that can be offered to the community in a more comfortable and private setting then what is currently found in the Los Nietos Board room.

After the Board of Trustees voted 4-0 to approve the Joint Use Agreement, an adjournment was called in order to appropriately celebrate the monumental occasion for the Los Nietos community. Representatives from the Los Angeles County Library system were on hand to express their gratitude and desire to provide a state of the art library to the Los Nietos community. Pictures were taken, congratulations given, and cake freely eaten as both the Los Nietos School Board of Trustees and the LA County Library officials vowed to continue to work collaboratively together in order for the LA County Library to move forward seamlessly.

It is projected that the LA County Board of Supervisors will vote to approve the Joint Use Agreement at their regularly scheduled May meeting, and that bids for the building of the new library will be approved in October of 2015.
