Los Nietos School Board of Trustees Recognize Exceptional People on February 26, 2015

At the Los Nietos School Board meeting on February 26, 2015, Trustees recognized the efforts of some special people. For almost a decade the Los Nietos School District has partnered with the South East Los Angeles County Educational Foundation (SELAC) to sponsor the “Feed the Families” program. Through donations from SELAC, District sponsored canned food drives, and outside donations, the program offers over 125 food baskets to members of the Los Nietos Community during the Christmas holidays.

Recognized for their efforts this past year are facilities consultant, Maria-Elena Romero, Architect, Edgar Paz, and Nelson School instructional assistant, Roxanna Castillo. For many years Mrs. Romero and Mr. Paz have donated money that has been able to purchase food gift cards that were used to supplement the gift baskets for the District’s most in need families. They have always donated to the “Feed the Families” program hoping to remain anonymous, but the Board was insistent on recognizing their efforts this year. An additional recognition was given to Roxanna Castillo for her efforts to write letters to local stores and agencies requesting donations of food items and toys. In her seventh full year of volunteering for the program she saw through her participation last year that more items could be donated if stores (Food for Less, Ralph’s, Trader Joes, and the Dollar Family Store were asked for donations through writing letters and visiting them personally. The Los Nietos Board of Trustees spoke with words of appreciation to Maria-Elena, Edgar, and Roxanna thanking them for their efforts and passion for the Los Nietos Community.

Additionally, retiring Santa Fe Spring Literacy Specialist, Jerry Edwards, was recognized for his effort to expand the love of reading with the Los Nietos students. Jerry had sponsored, through the Santa Fe Springs Library, the “Battle of the Books” program, which required students in a year to read 30 selected novels and be quizzed on the contents of the books in a game show style format at the end of the year. The program pitted schools in the Little Lake School District against Rancho Santa Gertrudes School, the only Los Nietos School in Santa Fe Springs. The “Battle of the Books” program became a very friendly rivalry between the two districts. Superintendent Vasquez, Principal Perez, and members of the Rancho Santa Gerturdes Community thanked Jerry for his passion for literacy and wished a happy and relaxing retirement with his family.
