Ada S. Nelson School Celebrates "Grandparents Day" on September 17, 2014

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 was Grandparent’s Day at Nelson School. Students took home invitations for grandparents to come spend the morning at school. More then 80 grandparents responded, but more than 100 grandparents showed up.

The morning started with Breakfast in the school cafeteria, then a quick walking tour of the school’s Breakfast in Class program, hosted by the Director of Food Services, Kurt Chou. Students in grades 4th through 6th eat breakfast in the class each morning to promote the benefits of not passing on the first meal of the day.

Grandparents were pinned with miniature female or male grandparent pins as they arrived. Next there was a presentation made by a representative from Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital about the components of a healthy breakfast. Grandparents were asked to participate in a question and answer session after the presentation.

Then the grandchildren were brought in and the fun began. Students and their grandparents decorated picture frames with various appliques and cutouts. Then, along with their nana’s and papa’s; abuelos y abuelitas, they took a family photo. The photos will be processed, inserted into the frames by Nelson staff and given to the grandchildren to take home.

After the photos were taken, many of the grandparents accompanied their little ones to the school’s Book Fair and purchased items that the grandchildren selected.

“We expected a good turn out,” said the school’s Principal, Marla Duncan, “but we never expected the large number of grandparents who came today.” Duncan said there were grandparents from as far away as Riverside and even a great grandma from Palm Springs.

“This was a wonderful event,” said one grandmother as she left the school smiling.

The school is having its fall carnival…a BOOzar on Thursday, October 30th, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The principal said she hopes they have as good a turn out for their carnival, the proceeds from which will be used for student field trips and student recognition.
