Los Nietos Instructional Staff Prepare for 2014-2015 School Year by Attending Week-Long Common Core Training on August 4th-8th, 2014

On August 4th Los Nietos teachers and special education assistants attended specialized professional development training developed to provide the District’s instructional staff the needed support to have a successful 2014-2015 school year. Under the direction of Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Jacqueline Cardenas, the Los Nietos instructional staff attended professional development designed to support them and the students they would be educating this year. The Los Nietos School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Vasquez are committed to supporting the teachers and instructional staff as we implement the Common Core State Standards this year.

All general education K-8 grade teachers attended a five-day district-wide grade level collaboration to align the language arts and mathematics curriculum to the Common Core State Standards. Los Nietos Principal’s Becky Speh, Marla Duncan, Octavio Perez, and Shannon Brann Zelaya helped facilitate the district grade level team meetings providing any support the teachers required. The Los Nietos School District began Common Core transition last year with all teachers attending a four-day professional development with internationally known curriculum and instruction presenter, Paula Rutherford. The professional development entitled, “Making the Common Core Come Alive!” provided in-depth understanding of how the Common Core Standards are different and similar to the California State Standards. Additionally, core tenants of the “Making the Common Core Come Alive!” series include: using available data, both classroom and external, to make and assess instructional decisions; promoting high standards for both students and adults; and most importantly making a commitment to collaborate with colleagues and parents. The tenants learned from the “Making the Common Core Come Alive!” series were embedded in the curriculum alignment process as well as best practices learned from previous curriculum alignment training.

Special Education teachers also attended five-day professional development that encompassed curriculum alignment, new changes with state and federal special education compliance, and a two-day certification program in Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI). By implementing strategies from the CPI certification, teachers will be able to better support students by helping them when they become frustrated and to proactively manage a student’s out of control behavior. Special Education assistants also attended the CPI certification training, which will ensure that all special education classrooms have both teachers and assistants trained to meet not only the academic needs of students but also their behavior and emotional needs as well.

More than one hundred of the Los Nietos School District’s instructional staff attended training during August 4th-8th. The Los Nietos Board of Trustees and Superintendent Vasquez would like to thank the dedicated instructional professionals of the Los Nietos School District for coming back to work a week early in order to participate in this very important professional development. Their hard work will help make the 2014-2015 school year a successful one both for our students and our staff.
