Los Nietos 2013-2014 Teacher of Year, Monica Quiroz, Speaks to Parents During Weekly Parent Education Class on March 5, 2014

On March 5, 2014, parents who attend the weekly ProEdu parenting class, listened intently to invited guest speaker Mrs. Monica Quiroz, 2013-2014 Los Nietos Teacher of the Year, speak about the importance of building a collaborative relationship between parents and teachers. The ProEdu parents, who are primarily Spanish speaking, requested that Superintendent Vasquez invite a Spanish-speaking teacher to attend the meeting and answer questions they had about how to best work with teachers. Superintendent Vasquez felt that the current Los Nietos School District Teacher of the Year would be an outstanding speaker to answer parental questions. Mrs. Quiroz spoke on the instructional shifts with Common Core State Standards, invited parents to take the new practice SBAC assessment, and provided strategies for having a successful upcoming parent teacher conference.

The Los NIetos School District Board of Trustee approved a contract this year to offer free parenting classes to Los Nietos parents in an effort to provide valuable information to parents in their native language that will help their students maximize their success in the Los Nietos School District. As parents have learned about student advocacy not only for their children but also for all Los Nietos students, district guest speakers have been invited to speak to the parents.

Special Education Consultant, Jeanne Gehle, spoke about referral services for special education services and what the continuum of services are under the Individuals with Disability Act. Principal Marla Duncan, who is the Whittier Area Student Attendance and Review Board (SARB) Chairperson spoke on the importance of having children be on time to school, the laws relating to extensive absences, and what to expect if children are referred to the SARB Committee for extensive absences. Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Jacqueline Cardenas, spoke to parents about the new State funding formula called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), and invited parents to upcoming district sponsored Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) meetings. Superintendent Vasquez has been invited to speak to the parents at the March 12, 2014, meeting on the role of the Superintendent in the Los Nietos School District.

PROedu is a project that began in 2002 as a result of parent participation in MALDEF’s (Mexican American Legal Defense Educational Fund) Parent School Partnership Program (PSP). The PROedu curriculum in based on the PSP curriculum and has been used extensively in the Whittier area to help promote parent involvement and empowerment. Graduates of the PROedu classes tend to serve on school committees and councils (PTA, School Site Council, English Language Learner Advisory Council), learn skills and strategies to help advocate for their children, and learn the necessary requirements their children need to possess in order to graduate high school and gain entrance into college.

The free classes, which are held primarily in Spanish, are held every Wednesday at the Los Nietos School District Office beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 10:30 a.m.
