24 Los Nietos Middle School Students Finish the Los Angeles Marathon on March 19, 2017

On March 19, 2017 students and adults representing the Los Nietos Middle School competed in the Los Angeles Marathon as part of the Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA) program. Twenty-four Los Nietos Middle School students finished the 26.4 mile marathon accomplishing something that will forever stand out as an event in their lives that they will never forget. Starting at Dodger Stadium just after 7:00 a.m., students and coaches embarked on the marathon route feeling confident that their seven months of training would enable them to successfully complete the course. Berenice Poblano was the first Los Nietos student to complete the race, finishing the marathon in four hours and thirty-nine minutes. The final student that finished the race clocked in after nine hours.

Principal Brann-Zelaya was stationed at the 24-mile marker cheering participants and Superintendent Vasquez was at the finish line to capture the exhausted but joyful looks on their faces as they proudly wore their Los Angeles Marathon medal around their necks.

On March 20th during school lunch, participants took pictures in front of the Los Nietos Middle School knowing that a grateful and proud community appreciated their accomplishment. Of particular note at the lunch were four students proudly displaying the two LA Marathon medals that they have earned, one from this year and the other from last year.

The Los Nietos School Board and Superintendent Vasquez would like to express their thanks to principal Brann-Zelaya, the coaches (Erika Rose, Desiree Chavez, and Christina Fontenot) and staff coach/supporters (Michelle Sanchez, and Noe Zelaya) for providing the guidance, support, and encouragement to help the Students Run Los Angeles students achieve their dream of finishing the 2017 Los Angeles Marathon. Parents of all 24 students involved in the SRLA program this year are also to be commended, acknowledged, and thanked for not only supporting their students but supporting the school and program as well.
