WHITTIER COMMUNITY LEADERS CELEBRATE THE LOS NIETOS MIDDLE SCHOOL’S CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL AWARD WITH A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION

Whittier, CA - On April 25, 2024, local elected officials, community partners, staff, parents, and students celebrated the Los Nietos Middle School STEAM Academy’s designation as a 2024 California Distinguished School. This designation follows the school’s designation as a Golden Bell School earlier this school year.

“To have our middle school named a 2024 California Distinguished School is an incredible honor,” said Superintendent Dr. Ramiro Rubalcaba. “Receiving this recognition in the same school year as the Golden Bell Award is a testament to the vision and partnership of Los Nietos School District staff, parents, and the greater community.”

Since 1985, the California Department of Education has designated schools that demonstrate exemplary achievement as California Distinguished Schools. This year, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recognized 293 secondary schools for their efforts to close the achievement gap and demonstrate exceptional student performance.

"We are immensely grateful for this recognition," expressed Los Nietos Middle School Principal Shanonn Brann-Zelaya. "It is truly wonderful to witness our school staff being acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in nurturing an environment that encourages student excellence and opportunities. Additionally, I would like to extend my gratitude to all our remarkable partners, whose support made this achievement possible."

On May 3, the California Department of Education will host a statewide awards ceremony recognizing Los Nietos Middle School and other honorees who received this designation.
