Los Nietos School District Hosts the First Community Advisory Board Health Meeting of the Year on October 8, 2014

On October 8, 2014, Superintendent Vasquez welcomed community health partners to his first Community Advisory Board (CAB) meeting of the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose for the event was to reflect on the progress made last year in supporting the health needs of the Los Nietos Community, and make plans to expand those efforts this year.

This year one time per month, certified health insurance providers are at each school's campus to help sign up parents, students, and extended family members for health insurance if they currently are not covered under any health plan. By working with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Los Nietos has been able to offer the free services to the students and families in the Los Nietos Community.

One of the newest partners to the Healthy Los Nietos collaborative is AltaMed Health Care Service, that is a health insurance provider for uninsured families birth through senior citizens. Upon meeting with Superintendent Vasquez and learning more information about the Healthy Los Nietos Collaborative, AltaMed wanted to become a partner and offered to share a new grant opportunity with the Los Nietos Community. AltaMed this year received a grant to provide health education in conjunction with physical education activities for both students and parents and selected Aeolian School to receive the free afterschool program. Both parents and students have been very excited attending and participating in the interactive activities.

Additional CAB reports were provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, PIH Health, the City of Santa Fe Springs, and the parents of “Promotora de Salud in Action.” The Department of Public Health reported on a Countywide needs assessment they are doing this year in order to better support the communities that are underrepresented in Los Angeles County like Los Nietos. Superintendent Vasquez volunteered to help County officials plan the next Countywide needs assessment meeting so the County can better service communities like Los Nietos.

PIH Health reported on screening results that were conducted last year with the first, third, fifth, and seventh grade students. Initial results show that the health education, and focus on eating “healthier" choices at school and at home have begun to show some positive progress towards changing the attitudes of children towards exercise and eating less “junk-food.”

The City of Santa Fe Springs reported on upcoming health events this year and ways the City of Santa Fe Springs could partner with the Los Nietos Community. On November 14th at the Gus Velasco Center in Santa Fe Springs, the second annual “Family Night Out” will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Once again the “Promotora de Salud in Action” parents will be providing health demonstrations to members of the Whittier, Los Nietos, and Santa Fe Springs communities.

Superintendent Vasquez thanked all in attendance for working collaboratively with the Los Nietos School District to meet the health needs of families in the Los Nietos School District.
